4 Dec 2022 My Tiong Bahru Heritage Tour

Managed to join the My Tiong Bahru Heritage Tour held on 4 December 2022, 9.30am
Have been wanting to go so that we can visit the air raid shelter 😉

The gang met at Tiong Bahru mrt and headed for Tiong Bahru market for breakfast

Meet up point for the tour is Tiong Bahru CC

That's our guide,
Started off the tour by asking us what Tiong Bahru mean.
The answer "new cemetery"

After getting our speaker and ear piece ready, we were set to go

The round buildings on both sides of the cc used to be air raid shelters.

Being near Chinatown, Tiong Bahru had also been known as
二奶村, where rich business man who lived in Chinatown, hid their mistresses.
The spiral fire escape stairs became escape route for the men to escape from their wives.

These buildings were also built with back lanes which allowed night soil collectors
to come by to collect the soil.

We saw the wall mural by Mr Yip Yew Chong (YYC)

This's YYC's birthday

The flats here are shaped of a ship and planes.

16th of 8th Lunar calendar is the Monkey god's birthday

Love story between Lee Kuan Yew and wife started in Tiong Bahru

The shop that has replaced Galicier Pastry in September 2022

Red House converted to hotel

The famous yellow bird stand where uncles used to hang their bird cages, sit down and listen to
their birds sing while drinking coffee.

Wow, an infinity pool in Tiong Bahru

Seng Poh Road separates pre-war and post-war buildings.
We were standing on the pre-war area (including the cc) whereas the opposite houses post-war buildings.

They used to slotter chickens in Tiong Bahru market.

This old shop in the area was going to close down soon

We were near the Air raid shelter, finally!
What? But this is the PS Cafe.

The shelter is actually behind and underneath PS cafe

Built to house 1,500 people

We were requested to use handphones as torches when we enter

Mary was born in the shelter during the war

U-shaped famous blk 78 horse shoe blk come with diff addresses

Bincho Japanese restaurant's back door is the entrance

Seng Poh garden used to plant vegetables and rare chickens

Does this look like a dancing girl?

The tour ended at Seng Poh garden

We ended with yummy lunch at Tiong Bahru yong tau fu

And cakes

On the way to mrt, spotted the Tan Tock Seng grave that we missed
