[Day 1] Autumn 1~12 Nov 2018 Adventures in Hiroshima

[Arrival & Hiroshima A-bomb Dome]

Taking off

By 31 October 2018 9.45pm, we were out of our houses to depart for Changi Airport. Thanks to Jean's kind & loving husband, all of us got a lift to the airport without any hassle. Our flight was the after-midnight flight at T2. We took SilkAir, which is quite a new direct route from Singapore to Hiroshima. And our excited team consists of Keng & Andy, Jean, Yong and me. We had Ya Kun for supper, then took a rest and massaged our legs before the flight.

"Gate Open"

Here is the route that I planned for the whole trip. A loop from Chugoku to Kansai, 有有海, it will gonna be a fun one. Starting point is Hiroshima (广岛), to Himeji (姬路), Asago (朝来), Kinosaki Onsen town (城崎温泉), Kyoto (京都), Osaka (大阪) then back to Hiroshima.

The kind "uncle" sitting by the window took this picture of the beautiful sunrise, from the beautiful land of the rising sun. Yes, we were arriving!!

We arrived! The airport in Hiroshima is small compared to Kansai, serving mostly domestic flights and some international flights. The weather was cool and the sun was shining brightly. We bought bus tickets from the ticket counter and then took the Airport limo (at bus platform 2) to Hiroshima station.

Approaching our hotel... The first hotel I had chosen for our trip was APA Ekimae Hiroshima. APA is a chain of business hotels in Japan. It was chosen for its close proximity to train stations, "Ekimae" actually stands for "in front of train station". However, they are also known for their small rooms that come with small bathtub in small bathrooms. Just squeeze a little for the next 2 nights la!

After placing our luggage at the hotel, we headed for lunch at ASSE, near to the train station. The first food we tried was okonomiyaki, which we heard originated from Hiroshima, so its a must try here. Actually, although it was some wait at Yotchan, the taste was so so. At least we have tried okonomiyaki fried noodles.

Hiroshima A-bomb Dome

Moving on to our adventure for the day: the Atomic bomb location where one of the last few buildings was found standing after the bombing occurred 73 years ago. After lunch, we walked to the Hiroden station in front of ASSE to take the electric tram to our destination (South exit).

Take either Line 2 or 6 to our destination

On the way in the tram

Jean wondered why the bus driver was carrying a lady's handbag.. its actually a ticket holder

Alighted at "Genbaku-Domu Mae" station

We first arrived at the "Domu"

Cross the bridge to get to the children peace monument

Many students gather for prayers at the children peace monument and museum

Oranges are in the season now?

That's the peace memorial museum in the background

We did not enter the museum but instead took a break at the café
After a rest at the cafe, nobody seems interested to visit the museum (entrance 200 yen) since part of it still has an ongoing renovation. In addition, we were tired from not sleeping well during our flight. Hence, we decided it was time to make our way "slowly" back to the hotel.

But we saw Sogo on the way and went in to look for branded bag.. and saw Pokemon store instead
Our dinner. While walking through Fukuya, we were discussing what to eat for dinner and a lady who can speak mandarin walked past us and stopped, saying she would like to show us a dinner place. She is from China but has stayed in Japan for 35 years. She wondered why we were in Hiroshima, as if wondering why we came to a boring place. But anyway, we followed her and she brought us to ASSE (where we had lunch..haha). We could not reject her but thanked her for her kindness. We ended up having dinner at level 6 of ASSE. Of course, after dinner, we have time and ended up shopping around the station until closing time.
Yummy tepanyaki food @ Tokugawa.. the food tasted unexpectedly good!
